When it comes to looking great in your clothes, the size on the tag does not matter. Flattering fit comes from being flexible about sizes. Today, I’m going to focus on five ways on how to find clothes that fit and flatter you.

Shopping for clothes can be very challenging, especially if you get hung up on sizes.  I’m in the stores all the time shopping with women and men of all sizes and shapes. Size does not matter.  Flattering fit comes from being flexible about sizes. It is not unusual that I will put my client in a size 8 pant, a top in a size 12, add a belt in a size large, and throw on a coat in a size medium. Looking in the mirror at her outfit of many sizes, she looks and feels fabulous!

Choosing the right silhouette for your body shape is the first step in the right direction.  You can experiment with new shapes that are out this season, and you may be in for a surprise!

How to Find Clothes That Fit and Flatter

COLOR

Color can make a big difference in perceived size. It’s fairly common that when my clients are wearing something white, I encourage them to go up a size. Darker colors (navy, black, charcoal gray), may look trimmer in a smaller size.  Lighter colors need to be selected with extra care.

 

FABRICS

When trying on pants, look at them in direct light if you can. That’s usually when you can detect whether or not your skin is looking smooth and even or revealing more than you’d like. Thin fabrics often reveal skin texture without your knowledge.

• Linen doesn’t like to be stressed at the seams.
• Lycra or Elastin in pants allows for a closer fit.
• Jersey is a fabric that can be very friendly.
• Silk is another fabric that really does not like being stressed at the seams.
• Tropical Weight Wool has a great drape to it.

PATTERNS

Solid-colored garments tend to show everything that’s going on beneath the surface of the garment.  While patterned fabrics distract the eye around the body without settling on one particular part of your body.

TEXTURE

Smooth fabrics can be less forgiving.  Adding texture to a solid colored garment provides ease and comfort. It also can be great at hiding any areas you want to hide.  Crinkled fabrics, ruching, and in some cases, ruffles are some textures to consider when you want to hide or conceal an area of your body.  It also adds a fun element to your overall outfit.

UNDERGARMENTS

Some fit solutions can be solved by wearing the right foundations. And, a bra fitting is a great first step!

• A full slip under a dress can keep the fabric from clinging.
• Shaper’s are great for evening events because you’re only wearing them for a short period of time.
• Seamless underwear doesn’t create lines.
• Smooth bras are best under knits like cotton and jersey.
