In the fashion world, prints have gotten louder, bigger, and bolder. Now fashion designers are sending models down the runway layering multiple outlandish prints in one outfit. These images look and on paper sound cluttered, chaotic, and over stimulating. And, you might be thinking, who would want to wear that?!
Let me tell you something you already know: You don’t have to indulge in trends at all. But I think you should adopt a print or two and bring it into your wardrobe this season. Why? Because prints can do so much for you inside and out. They also will expand your wardrobe and add some further interest to your look.
Here are some examples on wearing prints for personal and practical reasons:
WEARING PRINTS FOR PERSONAL AND PRACTICAL REASONS
Prints are very personal. When I have an initial consultation with a client, they are always ready to let me know the prints they like and dislike, regardless if they are wearing them or not.
Sometimes you’re attracted to a print because it reminds you of a loving person from your past. The thought of wearing that print brings you a satisfaction that can’t be explained.
Sometimes you see a print, and it reminds you of a hobby you have. A gardener may fall for a garden print. Someone who loves horses may be attracted to a print with symbols of horses or literal images of horses. Someone who loves hearts will fall for anything that has hearts on it.
Wearing a print that makes a personal connection to you feels nurturing and pleasurable.
Prints can expand your wardrobe effortlessly. This season prints are on everything: handbags, scarves, shoes, pants, dresses, tops, outerwear and more. If you have a wardrobe that relies heavily on solid colors, adding prints will make you feel like you have doubled your wardrobe choices. Mixing and matching will be easy and fun all season.
If you decide to mix prints to add interest to your look, it doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are some easy combinations to try.
- Polka dots with stripes
- Floral print with pinstripes or checks
- Literal prints with plaid or checks
- Checks with a buffalo plaid in similar colors

Prints can grow on you. Maybe you’re attracted to animal prints but have never worn them. You can try out a print by wearing it with something small like a handbag, in a shoe, on a scarf, or even a belt. You’d be surprised how a small amount of print will add a lot to your outfit.
If you’re ready to have your print take up more space: wear a printed blouse under a jacket, a printed dress with a jacket, or a printed coat over a column of color.
While prints can seem overwhelming if you’re seeing them in a window display or on a mannequin, there is a way to wear them that will bring you joy. I’d be very happy to help you explore prints this season. Who knows? You may become a huge fan of wearing prints. I’m here for you!
